Esri’s book breaks new ground with stories from people who use geographic information systems to transform lives

Esri

REDLANDS, Calif.- Esri , the global leader in location intelligence, today announced the publication of The Geography of Hope: Real-Life Stories of Optimists Mapping a Better World , edited by Pulitzer Prize winner and former CEO of the National Audubon Society, David Yarnold. The book is available next month.

The Geography of Hope introduces readers to a series of extraordinary people who are transforming the world through geographic information systems (GIS) technology. The book features nine contemporary stories, including a father-daughter duo fighting for fair elections, people defending democracy in Eastern Europe, and others defusing deadly explosives around the world in the wake of war. The book also addresses the need for more transparent policing, proposes ways to improve primary and secondary education, and examines the radical changes in national intelligence driven by artificial intelligence. It humanizes GIS and cartography by placing them in a real-world context.

Writer and photographer David Yarnold has travelled the world in search of new stories to tell, including how GIS is helping to build conservation that is both by and for Africans, to meet the challenges of climate change and threats to wildlife. He also describes how leading global companies are increasing their profitability through the use of GIS.

Yarnold showcases GIS in use around the world in an accessible way, through nine resonant stories about family, leadership, and collaboration. The Geography of Hope is also beautifully designed, with beautiful, full-color photographs and illustrations.

David Yarnold led a GIS-driven turnaround at the National Audubon Society, helped the Environmental Defense Fund teach China about carbon trading, and was executive editor of the San Jose Mercury News .

The Geography of Hope is available on October 1 in paperback (ISBN: 9781589487413, $39.99) and as an e-book (ISBN: 9781589487420, $39.99). The book will be available through most major online retail channels worldwide. Interested retailers should contact Ingram Publisher Services, the distributor for Esri Press books.
