Fort McMurray School Strike to Expand on Tuesday

School support workers in Fort McMurray Public and Catholic school districts are escalating their strike action as of January 7, 2025, moving from rotating strikes to a full-scale walkout. Represented by CUPE Locals 2545 and 2559, the workers demand substantial wage increases, as their earnings have stagnated at an average of $34,500 for over a decade. CUPE Alberta President Rory Gill highlighted the impact on students, particularly those with special needs, but emphasized the need for well-paid staff to ensure quality education. A picket will take place at the Catholic Division Office in Fort McMurray.
